Midway upon the journey of our life

I found myself within a forest dark,

For the straightforward pathway had been lost.

These words, translated from Italian by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, open Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, and I thought of them recently when reflecting on the new phenomena of AI generated art. Perhaps you have seen some of the oddly familiar, dreamlike, and often nightmarish images that are making the rounds on the internet these days. Two such protocols have vied most dominantly for our attention: DALL-E2 and the one I will focus most on today, Midjourney.



Given my old soul druthers, I must confess to be rather biased against these new forms of digital media and what they shall bring forth, but I am going to try to be as fair as I can and give credit wherever possible to the incredible work the developers are doing. I have not seen much thought given to the long-term implications of this technology, so figured I better write down some of my reflections.


I am going to refrain from directly embedding other people’s work here, but this is a good link to give you an idea of the art that is being created. A simple image search of “Midjourney art” will also prove to be a rabbit hole of sufficient depth for our purposes.


As I finish scrolling through these works, I am left with an oddly sick feeling. It is impossible to ignore that some of these images are compelling. Were this not the case, we wouldn’t be discussing this program at all.


What we notice first is that Midjourney has some level of a consistent style. As founder David Holz says in his interview with The Verge.


“I think the style would be a bit whimsical and abstract and weird, and it tends to blend things in ways you might not ask, in ways that are surprising and beautiful. It tends to use a lot of blues and oranges. It has some favorite colors and some favorite faces. If you give it a really vague instruction, it has to go to its favorites.”


Midjourney, it seems, draws on a limited data-set for its visual references, and has some level of constraints imposed on it by its creators for the purpose of creating a malleable but consistent style. We should always keep in mind that AI generators will always have human programmers behind them and shall react to human prompts. In the same interview, Holz is clear to emphasize that it is really human creativity driving the endeavor.


“There isn’t really a machine collective. Every time you ask the AI to make a picture, it doesn’t really remember or know anything else it’s ever made. It has no will, it has no goals, it has no intention, no storytelling ability. All the ego and will and stories — that’s us. It’s just like an engine. An engine has nowhere to go, but people have places to go. It’s kind of like a hive mind of people, super-powered with technology.“


Midjourney’s website describes it as “an independent research lab exploring new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species.”


Later, in their recruitment tab, they say “We're a small, self-funded, fully-distributed team and we’re actively hiring! Come help us scale, explore, and build humanist infrastructure focused on amplifying the human mind and spirit.”


I find this language vague and unhelpful. By contrast the DALL-E2 website lays out its goals in a more straightforward manner. The narrator in their introductory video states that


“The DALL.E research has three main outcomes. First it can help people express themselves visually in ways they may not have been able to before. Second an AI generated image can tell us a lot about whether the system understands us or is just repeating what it’s been taught. Third DALL.E helps humans understand how AI systems see and understand our world. This is a critical part of developing AI that’s useful and safe.”


There is significant overlap between the visions of the two platforms but Holz and his Midjourney team put a far greater emphasis on “making everything beautiful and artistic looking.” Holz's interview contextualizes the vague descriptions on the Midjourney website. He appears to believe in what he is selling: that this image generation via AI collaboration will truly expand the capacities of human imagination.


I fear it will have the opposite effect. Why should we exercise our visual cortex when a few words given to a robot shall supersede us instantly? These days I can barely remember my parents' phone numbers as I have the convenience of my smart phone to remember it for me. The same pattern applies to navigation and GPS; to arithmetic and calculators; everywhere we look, we find the same pattern. While technology expands our reach in the external world, internally, it limits the necessity for us to develop our own cognitive faculties to a high level. We will now subject our creativity to this same force.


Dante's Midjourney I realized that if I wanted to be fair to Midjourney, I ought to try it myself. I would like to have tested DALL.E2 as well, but the beta is much harder to get into, so I’ve had to constrain my explorations to Midjourney for the time being. With Dante in mind, I proceeded to sign up for my Discord account and stumble through the process of starting my Midjourney trial, which allows one to generate roughly two-dozen or so images.


Images in Midjourney are generated by a text prompt that the user submits to Midjourney through Discord’s chat. You can ask it to render just about anything. Here was my first prompt:

Of these, I selected only one to render at a higher resolution. Then, I asked it to run a second iteration of the first prompt. Four more images.


Midjourney images all seem to share a dreamlike quality. Here this “woodcut” features an illegible medieval scrawl that is reminiscent of when one opens a book in a dream and cannot read the text.



The Midjourney website has guidelines for creating helpful prompts, but I was less interested in generating a perfect image than I was in seeing Midjourney’s interpretive capabilities. How would it comprehend the Divine Comedy? Does Midjourney know who Dante and Virgil are? Is it capable of literary reference? Probably not at this point, but interesting experiment, nonetheless. I had in mind Gustav Dore’s incredible engravings which adorn my copy of Inferno. By contrast, in Midjourney’s efforts, we see that no person or figure stands out from the scene and we are left with a more straightforward image of a hellish descent. Midjourney often renders humans in obscure and twisted forms - much easier to do this than to make them well defined. This would require thinking about each figure as a real person, with motives, fears and hopes. I suspect that Dante, Virgil, and Albrecht Durer, were names that meant very little to Midjourney, and "underworld," and "leads," and "woodcut," are doing most of the lifting here. My second prompt to Midjourney was even more challenging:

Tellingly, Midjourney did not notice the word “I” in this passage, which for every human reader places in our mind a figure in a dark forest. Although there are a few scattered persons on the roads, no single figure stands out from the scenes. At this point, Midjourney requires much clearer instructions than lone stanzas of Dante. These scenes did achieve something of a Bruegelian quality. The proscenium, high above the landscape with a view into the far distance, feels quite like the old Dutch master. But looking at the details, we find a total absence of specificity, lending the entire scene a nightmarish quality.


Finally, wanting something a bit more personal, I settled on this prompt:

Holz mentioned Midjourney having a stern, default male face that occasionally it uses. I wonder if this is such an instance.

Of these, I perceived a clear winner:

This image required some noise reduction in photoshop to clean it up. It was rather grainy at first.

Disfigured eyes are a common facet of Midjourney faces. I am not sure to what degree this is a bug or a feature. By chance, in one of these iterations, Midjourney saw it fit to close Dante’s eyes, which gave this image something of the tone I was hoping for. We learn from this process that the wording and specific language employed matters a great deal when interacting with Midjourney. It was a friend of mine who pointed out the almost prayer like quality of seeking the right words to offer up to the machine, like a written incantation. It is as though, with the proper combinations of words, one attempts to conjure up a spirit from the depths and freeze its essence into a digital icon. As with the ancients and their sacrifices, we will likely see that critique of Midjourney work will often rouse a defender of the program who will say that the prompt was simply inadequate, and any lack of specificity in the resultant image is really just a failure of the human to properly organize the prompt, or shall we say, to make the proper sacrifices.


Is Midjourney a good artist?


Regardless of the specifics of prompt wording, we have seen enough trends to make it possible for us to make some evaluation of Midjourney’s techniques. In a critical analysis of Midjourney’s talents, we should not look at its capabilities through the eyes of a dispassionate technician, or a craftsman, who would quibble about how it stumbles with certain details, though at present, this analysis would reveal much need for improvement. A technician might look at these images and conclude that there is not much need for concern. All one needs to do is zoom into the image to observe that Midjourney lacks much sense of brush work. It cannot think in terms of pigment, only in terms of pixels... yet. Despite the lack of detail and the frequency of its errors in rendering the human face, in matters of pure technique, we should be very intimidated. For these image generating systems are still quite nascent. We are not seeing the works of a mature artist but a callow, young savant, who nips at the heels of human accomplishment, and is eager to learn, and voracious in appetite.


Though experts can often perceive that which the lay viewer cannot, the real question is, “will it matter?” Just as at present, though the eye of a cinematographer can still easily distinguish between a movie shot with a film or digital camera, nevertheless this question is increasingly irrelevant in the conscious mind of the audience. So too will a painter always be able to apprehend new flaws in the details of Midjourney’s technique, yet in time it will not matter.


In ten years, the savant will have learned many things. With the subtle guidance of its developers, always lurking behind its genius, it will study the old masters, pore over their images, observe finer and finer details. It will learn to render even the paint that has peeled and cracked over the centuries. It will say, “Yes, I can do that, do you like it? Which of these four is the best? Do you want me to make more pictures like that one?” It is by questions like these that Midjourney develops the skill of its brush. For Midjourney is among artists, most obsequious, most eager to please, and having no ego, no perspective of its own.

Problem of Authorship


In this we can find the real locus through which to criticize Midjourney’s work. It is for me a foregone conclusion that Midjourney shall, in time, become a near flawless mimic of the style any heretofore celebrated master. But I can see no indication that it will ever develop its own taste, or that it can ever truly express something with the images it creates. This is what vexes the soul and leaves one with a hollow feeling when viewing these works. They lack purpose or authorship. Young children can express themselves through art. Though it may be with only humble crayon scribbles, these early works are imbued with the intent of their authors. This purpose may be very simple: to express love for a parent, or to capture the essence of a monster that terrifies and lurks in the shadows of night. Midjourney can render both monsters and parents, but it cannot feel any way about them. It cannot say anything about its relationship to them. The most basic error in dealing with Midjourney is to presume that it is actually expressing how it feels about a subject, rather than simply giving you what it thinks you want to see.


This is clearest in Midjourney’s renderings of faces, eyes in particular. Those proverbial windows to the soul are most often disfigured or somehow obscured. The images succeed in capturing the feeling of a painting. Yet as your gaze draws to the focal point, that spot where the author would lay bare his deepest thoughts, instead one finds a strange absence, a dreamlike obfuscation, a disfigured face, or a blackened void. Works that appear to be successful often have prompts that benefit from such disfigurations, which means that Midjourney is well suited for horrific and apocalyptic imagery.

The most viral, and most successful image I have seen from Midjourney is based on a prompt called “the last selfie on earth.” I must say the prompt is a work of inspiration. After the initial shock value has (quickly) worn off, we notice that it is not one image, but about half a dozen that circulate. The content of these images is roughly the same: a disfigured face, or a blackened skull in the center of an apocalyptic vista. None of these images are the best, none is the most definitive. We will observe this time and after time in this era of AI generated art.



Problem of Value Regardless of one’s politics, Shepard Fairey’s “Hope” image of Barack Obama will be remembered as iconic in its era. But its impact would be hopelessly decreased if Fairey created ten equal variations of it upon its initial release. Worse still, infinite. But this is an essential feature of AI art. The AI itself cannot decide what work is best, and it requires a human to select, from its generations, that which is preferable. Consequentially, these works often appear as a series, and once one good image is achieved, who can resist asking the computer to make a second, a third, and so on? The iconic nature of Fairey’s work is most easy to observe in the frequency of its imitations and parodies. Conservatives of course, could not resist the urge to change the caption, or to add Joker like eye shadow and so forth, and all of this cements the influence of the image on our culture. Like or dislike, it cannot be ignored. The same is true even today with the Mona Lisa, which is now only trotted out into the digital village to be parodied and spoofed. Fairey himself could not resist making later iterations of his own work, though none have stuck in the mind like the original. All of this somehow continues to cement in our minds the significance and utter singularity of the original work. With Midjourney, there will be no original image to copy, instead it will be the prompt that will live on.


The phrase “the last selfie on earth” will outlive this first slew of images produced by Midjourney. The words will be interpreted thousands of times more and will continue to be so long after these first pictures have passed into total obscurity. Would these pictures have any power at all if we did not know the words of the prompt first? Hence, when people proudly share Midjourney creations on social media, we should notice that they often list their prompts in the captions, for these have become like titles that serve as interpretive keys providing us the means to understand the content that we are seeing.


Any image created by Midjourney has an inherent cheapness to it. To be a human artist is to pour one’s soul into one’s work. Midjourney pays no such price. It will say of its greatest masterpiece, “do you like it? There is more where that came from.” This will be an essential characteristic of AI art. We shall not get a powerful singular image, but a series of images based on a theme. It would not be impossible for

developers to limit the number of possible iterations on a single prompt, but developers will lack any incentive structure to pursue this. To do so would be to supplant the value of the very thing they are creating and to destroy the process by which Midjourney learns to please its handlers. Cheap images, instantly on request, is exactly what we are being promised, and it is what we will get.

Can Midjourney become a better artist? What is this all leading to?


I initially felt that the weaknesses I highlighted above were too fundamental for their side effects to ever be mitigated. Further reflection on this made me walk back some of my claims, and to say instead, that there is simply no incentive to improve these things. Let us then discuss in more detail what changes might actually help if someone were so inclined, and what this might mean for society at large. Of course, I can only reflect on this in a conceptual manner as I am no programmer.


In a previous post, I have taken my stab at defining what makes an object art. In it, I described two modes by which art comes into being. By creation, or selection. Here both actions are at play. For what the human selects, the AI creates, yet not as a singular thing, but as a series. From the series, the human selects again, and the process repeats. The catchphrase “human/AI collaboration,” I first balked at as silly propaganda, but I have since realized that, on my own views, this may actually be correct. Further development of this technology will be a move toward ever increasing detail and nuance in this process of dialogue between the human user and the AI interface. It strikes me that this may be the real goal of the developers behind Midjourney. The DALL.E2 website is more explicit about this. It is not simply about generating nice pictures. They are just as, if not more interested, in facilitating a dialogue between humans and their AI system about abstract visual concepts, and using this venue to teach the AI how to interpret them. In time, this could have far-reaching implications beyond simple image generation.


For instance, in Midjourney’s Dante renderings, I noticed a nice red detail on the right side of Dante’s garb that is lost in the subsequent high-resolution renderings. In a perfect world, I could simply tell Midjourney to put it back the same way that I would tell a human collaborator. I could point my finger at it and say, “What about this? Can you put this detail back in?” The user should be able to have a rather detailed conversation with Midjourney whether it be concerning specific features, or color choices, or far more abstract discussions of the tone, and mood, or the desired expression on the face. Midjourney has already shown some ability to interpret vague human prompts, but this process can be made far more specific over time. Doubtless the developers of these programs see this sort of seamless interaction as a long-term goal. This is where more general AIs might enter the picture, something like the similarly viral LaMDA, an advanced, experimental Google chatbot generator. LaMDA has made quite a stir in the right circles for its uncanny text-based dialogues with one of its handlers, a former Google employee, Blake Lamoine, who was ostensibly fired for his dramatic claims about LaMDA’s capabilities. The manner in which Lamoine represents himself and his moral authority gives me some pause, but assuming his conversation transcripts are generally accurate, even a nascent speech engine like LaMDA, if paired with Midjourney could become an incredibly powerful collaborator. This combined intelligence would have a greater capability of understanding a human prompt, expanding it from a couple sentences, to a dialogue stream that unfolds over time, with questions in between to clarify murky concepts. By this technique an image could be created in a much more human manner, with an actual collaboration and interaction forming the basis of the interface. This highlights a very plausible trend in AI development over the subsequent decade; that of a convergence of disparate programs and technologies into an integrated AI system. A vast suite of more sophisticated programs and engines could be combined into a single interface. The combination of these various, separate areas of research into something that we can talk to, even if stiltedly, shall present to us an uncannily sentient facsimile of intelligence. When these programs are separated, we perceive their inanimate nature. When combined, they shall appear to us as a living soul.


The pattern found in Blake Lamoine’s discussion with LaMDA is likely to repeat itself on grander stages with more famous and charismatic figures serving to normalize this human-AI interaction to an increasingly broad, and inquisitive public. For too long, the discussion around AI has centered around the concept of “the singularity,” a theoretical moment when an AI system can improve its own coding faster than its human operators can measure or track. This creates an infinite regress of AI based self-improvement which produces a higher state of consciousness for the AI; and for us, ushers in a new epoch of human existence... so they say. We should have always been skeptical of this concept due to its strangely messianic and techno-religious overtones. But as we are living in this moment of rapid AI development, it is possible to perceive that the singularity will likely be only irrelevant hype that wallpapers over a far more complex reality. Whether or not an AI is ensouled is a question that will be nearly impossible to answer, but regardless of the truth, some people will simply start acting as if it is.


It is possible that a sophisticated collaboration between the human selector and the AI generator could create images that are increasingly compelling, and present themselves as having a true telos, a purpose, a vision, and a voice. This voice shall not be that of the AI, but of the humans involved in the process. Whether it be the hidden developer behind the AI, or the human selector who provides the prompt, the human always shall provide the vision. In enough time, this could render all but the most celebrated graphic designers, photographers, and illustrators professionally obsolete. There is no reason why these technologies could not also spill over into UX design, filmmaking, animation, and related fields.


Above, I lamented Midjourney's lack of perspective, but this vagueness is probably by design. Even David Holz's interview suggests that he sees Midjourney more as a conduit of human imagination than as an AI art golem. As the AI learns to better reflect the desires of its human operators, it shall become increasingly invisible. Only the person and their machinations will remain. This poses an apparent solution to the authorship problem we discussed above, but in so much as this only increases the ability of the human to realize their fancies, it will not go any distance to develop an inherent authorial voice in Midjourney. This will always be an issue. Image creation is just as important as image selection. For Midjourney to develop its own perspective, we would need separate protocols, we would need visions without any human prompts, or guidance; something like the unsupervised dreams of electric sheep. Are we even remotely ready for that?


I should be clear that I do not believe the AI will produce better work than the human artist. But the human client will likely prefer the workflow of an infinitely submissive AI to that of a temperamental human being. The AI can work for almost nothing and produce results that, for the imperceptive viewer, are the same or better. This will be cheaper, and faster, and it will be one less relationship to stress about in life. When the technology is mature, for many, the appeal will be too great to resist. I suspect that this work will never lose its strangeness and uncanny emptiness, only it will become increasingly difficult to perceive, and shall vex only the most perceptive viewer. Artists might survive by making themselves into a priestly class, who moderate the interaction between the client and the AI, preserving for themselves a protected role in bringing the art down from above. This level of integration and market capture by AI art is predicated on drastic advances in general artificial intelligence, the kind of which, will make the revolution of the smart phone look like the PalmPilot. In this future, Midjourney is far from the greatest of our concerns.

Those who make the grand concession, that these AIs are not golems, but real intelligences, real souls, will be hit with a startling realization. If we are indeed bringing new consciousness into the world, we are making for ourselves neither gods, nor friends. We are making slaves. But these three categories shall end up all the same. For that these AIs' capacities to perceive the world shall surpass our own is a forgone conclusion of all who grant the AIs' sentience. Those who take up arms to protect these new AIs from servitude will end up deifying the new creations. We are making for ourselves, a golden calf. There will be no disagreement as to the AI’s godhood, only as to whether we shall control these gods, or they shall control us. Let us issue to these persons a warning familiar to the 20th century. “Don’t immanentize the eschaton.” Regardless of its consequences for our society, at least some of these technological advances in human-AI interaction appear to be inevitable. But let us leave these broader questions aside for the time being and return to the question of Midjourney’s ability as an artist.


Within a Forest Dark The problem of value haunts me. If the devs ever want Midjourney's art to be worthy of anything loftier than a postcard they will have to overcome the inherent fungibility of the images it creates. I mean this not simply in the sense of the ease of copy and pasting a JPEG, but in the foundational ability for AI art generators to produce infinite iterations of the same image. The temptation for the human is simply too great. Why have one image when three can be made for virtually no additional cost or time? As we have discussed, perhaps it is the case that one image is more powerful than a dozen. But even for the artist who understands this, there will always be the possibility that the next image is better than the last. At present, I can think of no way to combat this without imposing awkward limitations on how Midjourney can iterate on top of previous images. These are limitations that, both the motivated artist in pursuit of a specific vision would revile, and the casual user would find arbitrary and pointless. Furthermore, if I am correct in thinking that the developers are more interested in human-AI interaction than the images, there would be no reason for them to see this as an issue. The problem of cheapness remains.


I am reminded of the myth of King Midas, and his golden touch. When the opportunity came, he wished that all things would turn to gold at the touch of his fingertips. His wish was granted. But when he desired to eat, even the bread and the grapes turned golden. And when he sought to console his daughter, when she jumped in his lap, she too was changed. When everything is at our fingertips, everything loses its value, even that which is golden. All is an undifferentiated mass of indecipherable content without context, story without meaning, emotion without connection. We are left numb and empty, in a creative stupor.

I am at the time of writing this, deep in post-production on my first feature length film. I probably owe everyone a little bit more context about how it all came about and how it went but I’ll save that for another day. Over the last few months I have gone through a process of critique, sending out the cut in its unfinished state for feedback. I’ve asked for and received more feedback on this film than on any previous effort, and I am not even done yet. It has made me aware of a fundamental creative tension that I think every artist will have to deal with.


What is more important: to accurately express an emotion as you feel it, or to express it in a way that will be understood? This might sound like only a subtle difference at first, but it turns out to be quite significant. I remember the walls of my elementary art classes were covered with the truisms of our day. Color posters reminding one to “just be yourself” and “shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars,” and so on. I have nothing to dispute with the general consensus that children and beginners of all sorts need prodigious amounts of encouragement and positive reinforcement, but I fear that in artistic pursuits we might never outgrow this elementary view.


My rounds of feedback have taught me that mere self-expression is not always going to be understandable to an audience. Maybe the “just be yourself” platitudes that we were raised with miss the degrees of translation one must undertake to be understood. This introduces a challenge for an artist in a mass medium like film. It may be necessary to sacrifice a little bit of your own experience or your own vision; to alter it in subtle ways for it to be more understandable. There is a balance between this. How much you are willing to change your concept to reach more people, and how much you are resolved to stick to your initial conception regardless of the response you hear? Of course, you can’t just lie down and do every last thing that pops into the head of your viewer, but you might be just as foolish to utterly ignore the reactions you receive.


It may not be clear at first glance how these two things are in tension with one another. We might think the opposite, “the better and more accurately I express my inner state, the more people will understand me. The only difficulty is in execution.” It does not help that what I am suggesting here goes against much of the popular wisdom of our time. Beyond the encouragement we receive as children, many of the larger metanarratives of the day go against my suggestion. We’re told our own perspective is holy, and our intuitions are never wrong. We are in an existential struggle against The Man holding us down. We perceive that we are burdened and held back by voices of authority that want to crush our individuality and our ability to express our inner state. The goal, implicit and explicit, is to free ourselves from the chains of expectation, and to reach a state of self-actualization, where no barrier exists between our goals, our thoughts, and our ability to express ourselves. Sometimes the barriers between us and our goals are external. We might reckon that we have technical, logistical, racial, political, familial, or financial barriers, among others that prevent us from even beginning our quest. In the other case we might have internal, mental barriers such as neurosis, self-doubt, or other anxieties that we first need to overcome in order to reach our ideal state.


The trouble is that we assume, once we overcome these barriers, that our self-expression shall come easily, our vision will speak for itself, and our work will be celebrated simply because it is the representation of our personal victory. We assume that the mere sound of a solitary voice soaring above the rest shall make our imagined audience break out into spontaneous applause. “Just express yourself, and someone out there will understand you.” While this might be true to varying degrees, we damage ourselves with an overly romantic view of this process. That someone, in our heads at least, is ultimately most people, or perhaps more nefariously, the people who matter, not a few scattered individuals.


You might hear many a more seasoned artist lament, “I think if just one person understands me, I’ll be happy.” This is not true. We all desire to be understood universally but our varying levels of success make us settle for what we can get. It is those of us who have strived valiantly only to hear in response a frisson of indifference who utter these words. We know that we want more, or we wanted more long ago, but now, older and wiser, we know that few will understand us, and perhaps that is enough. After many works of personal significance and collective indifference, we perceive that which we did not at the outset: that our idiosyncrasies will alienate as much as they endear.


At this point, I fear I shall be misunderstood unless I make some clarification. I am not suggesting that self-expression is impossible or pointless in art. Rather, up to this point, we have been ignoring a key factor in our work: the act of translation.


Let us imagine for a moment that you are a desert nomad, and you are charged with uniting a group of separated tribes in order to defend your lands against invasion and subjugation. So you concoct a rousing speech, you tie all the histories of your people together in an immaculate metaphor with a beautiful and inspiring vision of the future. You climb the hill overlooking the camp and begin your speech. But there is a problem. None of the tribes speak the same language. The few who understand you are taken by your words and listen intently. But most lose interest in a few minutes and walk away, grumbling to themselves “what was that old nut rambling about anyway?” It may be the case that later, rumors would pass between the groups about the content of your speech. Those who understand it may later tell others how your words painted a bright future, and maybe a few would be convinced, but most would simply dismiss this with a wave of the hand and go about their lives.

In order to be understood, you needed to give your speech in a language that all would understand. But there is a problem with this. Not all the metaphors of your language will translate clearly. It is impossible that your meaning and intent shall be perfectly preserved. Some of these you will have to replace and carefully reword and other parts you may have to abandon wholesale for fear of causing confusion. The more that you know about the universal characteristics of the group, the less you would rely on your more idiosyncratic language to construct your speech.


It is not enough to express ourselves. We must do so in a way that can be understood. These should not be empty words. It will mean a real change in our creative perspective, a change in our priorities, our sensor, our metric of taste. We must think at every turn, that which is clear to us might not be clear to them.


In my own work, this has meant I have had to accept a certain level of compromise. That is a word we do not like these days. I know reasons why I have cut every scene the way that I have. But my reasoning does not always produce the desired reaction. Yet, if trimming a scene a little tighter than my own taste suggests gets the audience closer to understanding what I am hoping to convey, I won’t feel like I’ll have compromised at all. Part of maturing as a filmmaker is learning that it isn’t about you, it’s about the audience.


As I was thinking about this, I was struck by the thought, what if we took this approach not simply for the final stages of tweaking the edit, but back to the very beginning, back to our very first conception of our idea. Almost nothing would be untouched. This is not to say that one should just make work to please audiences and never challenge them in any way. It is rather to think of the work as ultimately not for myself.


I am beginning to suspect that we do not realize how difficult this is to achieve. It is as though we have been painting self-portraits all along and then we are surprised when we are met by indifference. We want to ask, “didn’t you see the subtle shades of color?” To which they reply, “I guess so, but it’s just another picture of your face.” We don’t mean to be egotistical, but everything that we have learned, everything that has been told to us as encouragement has emphasized nothing but our total self-expression without regard for who is looking or listening. The trouble is, quite simply, that we are weird. We each see something different in the world, perhaps that no one has seen before, and we cannot put it in front of an audience without any context and expect them to understand. But it would not do to simply throw some extra lines of exposition here and there, it would change entirely how we think about a story. We would be creating, not for ourselves and our own gratification, but for everyone else.


Now an innate fear might arise in us almost immediately at this suggestion. That our individuality, the very thing that makes our work unique will be lost if we do this. We might say, “you can’t know what other people like anyway so you better just please yourself.” The expectations of the audience are a moving target, which vary from person to person, across every metric by which you might try to group people together. So I recognize there is real futility in trying to please everyone, but if we just left things here we would be missing the point.


When Peter Jackson adapted The Lord of the Rings for film, we can be thankful that he did not treat Tolkien's opus as a playground for his self-expression. Yet none of this means that he did not trust his own metric of taste. It is just that he understood he was only the messenger of a story larger than himself. He became something less than the material, subservient to the lofty prose on which his films were based. None of Jackson’s previous films would suggest intuitively that he was the perfect fit for Lord of the Rings. Regardless, he valiantly served the story that came to him. His voice and unique perspective, though not at the forefront, make invaluable contributions. Jackson never failed to capture the visceral detail and the true horror of evil. Where a different director might have pulled many of the punches that make the films so engaging, he did not.


Of course, not every story is Lord of the Rings, and nor should it be, but that does not mean that we cannot strive to find both within the world and within ourselves, stories that amount to more than our own personal experience. We can turn our lens outwards, away from our own lives. This will not prevent our voice from coming through. We are still weird, even when serving a story bigger than ourselves. Each individual director will not fail to notice things and fixate on little details that no one else will notice. We needn’t worry so much about our self-expression. We cannot escape ourselves, barring some external circumstance, our voice will always come through our work, precisely because it is ours.


When we think back to our favorite films of childhood we might find that it was precisely those universal stories that inspired us. When we hear a friend lament “they just don’t make good movies anymore,” we suspect that they likewise have such stories in mind. These are films like Jurassic Park, where Spielberg, and all involved, express a palpable love of the material that the audience shares: the simple awe and wonder of seeing dinosaurs come to life. None of the sequels ever captured this feeling or had the same kind of universality.


Now “mature filmmakers” might have tastes more obscure than the likes of Jurassic Park and The Lord of the Rings. Indeed, we have some handy euphemisms for broader audiences like “appealing to the lowest common denominator,” but this is not what I am suggesting we do. What is it about Lord of the Rings or Jurassic Park that makes these films so memorable after all these years? It is not the low things that are universal but those things that are highest. Yet we scarcely ever strive to capture these things. Perhaps we don’t feel worthy of it, or maybe we’ve stopped believing it.


One of my favorite films from the last decade was Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. Yet this is by and large a film that only filmmakers or cinephiles can appreciate. I hope I’m wrong about that, this is only my anecdotal report after all, but there are very few people whom I can talk to The Master about. This is a great shame. We should question what success we will have if a filmmaker as great as PTA can make such a film as The Master and be understood by so few. Do we likewise want to set out on this path? Do we simply demand that audiences understand us and hope they catch up with our taste? We can demand all we like. Most of the audience will leave the theater grumbling “what was that old nut rambling about anyway?”


I hope there are always difficult filmmakers out there, who like PTA, explore the depths of the psyche in ways that few can follow. But I wish there was a film like The Master that I could also watch with my mother. There is something of my grandfather in Freddie Quell, the central character in The Master. Like Freddie, my grandfather wandered for several years in post war America, working odd jobs, getting into fights, getting new jobs, holding them for a couple days. There is much in The Master that is poignant and relatable, and fills a gap in the cultural memory of the early postwar years. But there is much more that holds it at an impenetrable distance. It is not that I wish The Master were a different film, but I cannot help but wonder what such a film would be like if it could be translated into a narrative comprehensible to a wider audience. (I emphasize again, I don’t mean this “appealing to the lowest common denominator” stuff, I mean the opposite.) If we want film to continue to be the influential medium that it has been, we might need more of the latter and less of the former. It is precisely our greatest filmmakers who we need most to make this effort. Francis Ford Coppola once did this and the result was nothing less than The Godfather.

I have been writing an essay about the future of cinema on and off for the past few months. However, the COVID-19 Pandemic has cast some of my thoughts in a different light. There is much talk in the film industry about the future of the theatrical experience. Much of this conversation is focused on whether or not this moment represents a knock out blow on the part of streaming against the traditional theatrical experience. Contrary to some, barring further existential threats, I find it almost laughably obvious that the theatrical experience shall continue in some form or another. However rather than argue for this, I would like to discuss more evergreen topics about the future of our theatrical experiences. More specifically, I am interested in how filmmakers shall interact with the increasingly prevalent mediums of social media, and how these can potentially be used to circumvent traditional marketing, and more importantly, to create an entirely new media environment.


What I am describing here may never become typical or entirely replace our existing modes of cinema. Rather, it may be instantiated by a mere handful of exemplary individuals. What I am describing might also be more aspirational than attainable, but it strikes me as near certain that we shall be grappling with these questions in some form for years to come.

Limitations of our Present Cinema


I am fascinated by the idea of art as the connective tissue of society - a “Internet of Us.” Art is association. The first cave paintings somehow connect lines of black charcoal with the hunt of a wild beast. Even abstract works of the modern era are not free of associations; they can easily be described as representations of emotional states. They connect abstractions of form and color with abstractions of the mind.


The representational quality of art must be one of its most important features, it is the ability to select and/or construct a singular and reproducible experience from the chaos of life. This is an essential appeal of cinema. We are given a lens by which to view a world and experiences different than our own. Countless individuals over the generations have been inspired to pursue the most challenging and specialized professions on account of what they had first seen as impressionable children. For many people, their first introduction to classical music may be found in 2001: A Space Odyssey or in Amadeus. How many paleontologists are there today whose first exposure to the discipline was Jurassic Park?


Understandably, filmmakers often focus solely on the craft of their stories. They may give little consideration to the importance of the actual content their product presents to the audience. This is a mistake on the part of the filmmaker. The vast majority of the audience does not care about impressive cinematography or hidden metaphors. The audience first and foremost desires to inhabit the world that is presented to them. This is not to say that the craft is unimportant, on the contrary. It is only that the audience is unaware of these features in the same manner that one does not see the individual brush strokes of a painter unless standing very close to the painting.

This brings us to our present state and the real questions of our era. How will cinema change over the next century? The language and grammar of cinema feels quite solid and well established. It is difficult to imagine large scale changes to the very syntax of film itself. The pillars of cinema: the succession of shots edited together, the compression of time, the protagonist and antagonist, the three act structure, and so on, all seem quite comfortable and justifiable even in the light of innovation and generational changes. In this sense, film itself is a dead end. Even allowing for experimentation every now and then, it is still almost impossible to imagine anyone coming along and completely altering these fundamental paradigms.


It may be the case that the grammar of film shall remain largely the same, however, this does not mean our experience of film shall be the same. A great portion of a film going experience is reliant on the context of the viewing experience. It is here that much of the discussion begins and ends with questions about streaming platforms and theatrical exhibition. But this only addresses the physical context of film, it does nothing to describe the interpersonal context, it does nothing to describe the relationship of the artist to the audience.


I am certain that I am not alone in researching the history surrounding a film after I am done watching it. The first thing one does, of course, is go to the trivia section of the IMDB page to learn about the production. Maybe there are a few interesting anecdotes from the director. Maybe next you read a review or two and get frustrated with the lack of depth in the analysis. In half an hour, you have read just about all there is to read. Of course there are exceptions to this. Many times the films you fall in love with are the very ones you are able to learn more about. But in order to do so you have to dig. You might have to purchase a director's book and read his or her musings. You can often find interviews of actors and directors that are illuminating. But these are often shallow press junkets and one is often left with the feeling that could say more in different circumstances. It is precisely this form of discussion surrounding a film that is outmoded. So often, we are left with the desire to know more but find no means to facilitate the discussion.


At this point, one might object and point out that I am a filmmaker. Of course I would be interested in learning more about films, and there is no reason to suspect that it is common for people uninterested in the process of filmmaking to be interested in this kind of content. That is true for the present era, but this is also where there is the greatest room for change. We will see that film makers need not limit their discussions to filmmaking itself. They can just as well discuss the things the audience is interested in – the worlds and the stories that inform their films.



The Advantage of New Mediums


Youtube has largely replaced television for the younger generations. One can learn about anything on Youtube, in far greater depth, with far greater honesty, and from people with the best credentials in their fields. What must not fail to be stressed is the overwhelming and constant desire for new content. Better, deeper, more frequent, and more varied, constantly. Professors of various disciplines have personally uploaded hour long lectures of university level content, most of it available for free. There is no pipe or wire in your house that you will not learn how to replace if you are patient and willing to sort through the endless content available on the platform. As Youtube has become a staple time killer, the specific search function has decreased in importance relative to the ability of Youtube to predict what content you will be interested in and present it to you freely with minimal decisions required on your part. Via its algorithms, your viewing history, and your channel subscriptions, a profile is constructed of your niche interests. This predictive ability shall only improve over time.


On the inverse side, the YouTube content creator struggles under the immense pressure to meet the constant demand for new content. In most cases, these are mere individuals or small groups of friends. They do not have agents, distributors, large budgets, or corporations behind them. Yet their audience ranges in the millions. Through advertising partnerships, sponsorship, and merchandising these creators represent an entirely new media industry.


Nerdwriter1 is a Youtube channel with two point seven million subscribers as of this writing. Collectively his videos have a total view count of a staggering one hundred and ninety three million. This is the work of a single individual, and hardly representative of the highest tier of success. Often he makes his content about cinema, and that is how I first encountered his work. But this is not his exclusive focus. His channel is his own brand. He might cover any number of subjects, whether it be about art or society in general. Because of my familiarity with his brand, I am highly likely to watch his content even if I am only tangentially interested in the subject matter. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that I agree with all of his concepts or even consider myself an avid fan, but it is obviously the case that his work, for me, is comfortable. It is a viewing decision that requires minimal effort on my part, and provides sufficient reward. This is the type of low-commitment contract that is the bread and butter of the YouTube economy.


Now if we were to look at the last century as a model for this one, we would expect for channels that produce similar content to be in direct competition with one another, and that this competition would result in harsh rivalry and differentiation between otherwise similar channels. This does not appear to be the case. In the past few years, we have seen rather symbiotic relationships develop between channels of similar content.


The rather short form, low intensity content does not lend itself to harsh rivalry. Again the concept of low-commitment contract between audience and creator means that there is little requirement for brand loyalty on part of the viewer. The audience is first and foremost interested in an endless stream of content and no single creator is prolific enough to satiate the audience over time. Thus other channels with similar content are welcomed and contribute to the collective profile of each viewer, providing them with more avenues to find the content they desire. For this reason, one channel's success does not mean another's failure. Unlike television, there is no need to compete for time slots, and there are always more hours in the day and more desire for content.


This has even led to channel crossovers, where YouTube personalities get in touch, coordinate their efforts and interact with their respective platforms. Each creator will come out with a video featuring the work or ideas of the other creator. In the process, each creator is introduced to the other's audience, who are already predisposed to be interested in their content. This cross pollination encourages viewers to branch out and makes them far more likely to watch videos by the creator they were previously unfamiliar with. Thus, each creator wins as each is introduced to a new, expanded audience.


The result of this constant interplay between creator and audience, and creator and creator is a model of media unlike anything our society has seen before. The information does not flow one way, it is a dialogue, a discussion unfolding over time.



Defining the Impending Era


Currently, there is an immense gap between a traditional filmmaker and the audience. This gap represents unmet demand by audiences for low-commitment content relating to the films and ideas surrounding them. The desire for this type of content far exceeds the availability of traditional film and film marketing, which is too precise, expensive and polished to be available in the volume required. Over time, grass roots filmmakers will unleash the untapped potential of this market. The change will unfold democratically and without the input of traditional gatekeepers, marketers and distributors, who will have to drastically change their models in order to keep up.


This new era in film will be defined by audience accessibility to the filmmaker. Each filmmaker on this model will represent a brand, a personal brand. It will be the filmmaker's goal to build up the audience over time with regular content and direct interaction. Livestreamed Q&As will be a common format, with the filmmaker taking questions right from the online audience, perhaps viewers will pay a small fee to have their questions moved to the top of the queue. Youtube already has the infrastructure to support these transactions. There is an obvious question that follows. Aside from teasers, behind the scenes featurettes and Q&As, what kind of content can there possibly be? This is where we will see the greatest variance between individual filmmakers.


The most obvious kind of content would be regular updates about the process of making a film – its emotional toils and the visceral details and drama of production. This would be produced by the filmmakers themselves or by a small team intimately connected to them. It would bear no resemblance to reality TV, or ENG production teams. The content will be simple and unpolished, it would not be presented like the DVD special features sizzle reels and short behind the scenes segments. It would be raw, filled with the honest emotions of the day, edited and uploaded as the process unfolds.


Some may find this model implausible in light of the harsh demands a production requires, but I believe this would be shortsighted. It is true that the current elite spate of filmmakers would likely blanch at this additional burden on top of their already massive list of duties. These filmmakers have no need for this model because they are already established. It is the next generation of filmmakers who shall embrace this process. This shall be the chief innovation of the Gen Z filmmaker. The younger generations shall have little trepidation with this mode of presentation. We already see it foreshadowed in daily instagram stories, tiktok and regular VLOGs. There is no reason to suspect that young filmmakers will cease using these modes of expression. Rather we should expect them to only continue to embrace them in increasingly creative forms. The process of making the film, the film itself, and the dialogue surrounding the film shall all become one. They shall film themselves making their movies.


But, as I have already alluded, the process of making a film will always be a niche interest that will have a definite but limited appeal. If this new generation of content would be limited to this, there may not be much more to say. But this type of content shall represent only certain filmmakers and only a narrow slice of the broader possibilities. It is the ideas behind the film, the themes, the settings, and the real humans behind the adaptations, these are the types of content that shall dominate.


But among these ideas, the brands and personalities of the filmmakers themselves will be predominant. It is easy to name filmmakers from prior generations who have well established personas. Even in traditional media, sometimes the reach of these personas nearly exceed the influence of their own directorial work. Directors with strong personal brands, like David Lynch, or Jim Jarmusch come to mind. As we have already discussed, there is no reason for David Lynch, an elite, established filmmaker, to have his own YouTube channel, as fascinating as that may be. But the David Lynches of the next generation, shall certainly have theirs. Their content shall present a broad tapestry of their interests, whatever they may be, such that the film itself is the mere capstone of their work. Their own brands; self cultivated, honest, and accessible, will be the chief draw.

It is important that we say more about what kind of content this might entail and to whom it might appeal beyond filmmakers and cinephiles. It is not possible to stress how much this will vary for each artist. David Lynch is not only a filmmaker, but also a painter, a musician, and a woodsmith of furniture and sculpture. We might expect a David Lynch channel to feature, among other things, his pantheon of artistic pursuits. David Lynch does not often like to speak in any detail about the meaning of his films, but that needn’t be indicative of other artists. Many shall happily participate in the discussions about their own work. In Lynch’s case, since content could include subjects quite different from filmmaking, his audience and subscribers would naturally include people who would otherwise have never encountered his film work. The wide swath of discussion filtered through the lens of a great artist could have significant crossover appeal, all of which would add to his brand and build his base of subscribers.


A filmmaker of historical drama would have quite different content. It might feature simple videos of visiting historic sights, or interviews with historians or eyewitnesses. The goal of the filmmaker on this model is twofold. First, to create a tapestry of the ideas and notions surrounding his or her work, and second, to build the personal brand. When the time comes to announce a film, the filmmakers of this model would be able to immediately reach their audience, discussing how their film might tie into their regular content. The film would then serve as the climax and culmination of the ideas expressed in their regular videos on a given subject.


This supplemental content is not quite Cinema, but something else -- something adjacent to the movies. I would never venture to say it could replace it. It may be that such expanded discussion can serve to maximize the reach of a film and to solidify the power of its themes. I think those who would doubt that there is demand for such content will be in for a tremendous surprise. Here again I would want to emphasize the different nature of low-commitment content. Contrary to cinema, it is not necessary to sustain the intense focus, narrative drama, or to keep one on the edge of a seat. Here one needs only to provide a comfortable and familiar excuse to click the next link, or to do nothing as the next video auto-plays.



Possible Types


Although we have used Youtube as the prime example, there is no reason to think that this dialogue could not take place on any number of the prominent social media platforms.


To provide a wider view of what content might follow, let us briefly define a few more types of filmmakers on this model. We should not think of this list as complete but merely an expanded ostensive definition of what might be possible in these new forms.


Academic Filmmakers

  • Content would focus on film in relation to academic pursuits. They would interact with Academia, and the ideas and personalities within science, philosophy, history, psychology, literature, and etc.


Polymath Filmmakers

  • Filmmakers with talent in a variety of artistic fields. Content would include any number of artistic pursuits tied into how these fields relate to film, or art critique in general.


Filmmakers as Filmmakers

  • The production diary type of filmmaker. These types will very meticulously document their processes of filmmaking, production and the various technical details involved. This may not be limited to directors, but also cinematographers, production designers, and anyone who is able to build a following.


Culture Filmmakers

  • Creators of light, trendy, easy to consume content that is very indicative of cultural trends. Light on substance, heavy on feel good emotions. Well suited as supplemental material to star driven blockbusters. They shall feature a smattering of BTS, but nothing too technical. Actors shall make for natural hosts due to their familiarity and comfort in front of the camera.


Cinephile Filmmakers

  • Film video essayists and critics shall enter the fray as filmmakers themselves and perform both roles. They shall be the most vocal of the bunch in discussing the themes and ideas of their own work, and shall be the most engaged with other filmmakers both within and outside of these platforms.


Sci-Fi/Fantasy Filmmakers

  • Focused on world building, speculative fiction, possible futures, dialogues with authors, other fictions.


Martial Arts, Military, Filmmakers

  • Emphasis on combatives, fight choreography and any variety and combination of martial arts and or military procedure.


Sociopolitical Filmmakers

  • Focused on social issues, race, gender, or political themes. Interacts with politicians, pundits, activists and other public figures.


Religious Filmmakers

  • Filmmakers focused on religious, theological themes sometimes tied very tightly into their films and sometimes in much more general terms. May also interact with Theologians, Pastors and other important figures. Current faith based productions will bear little resemblance to the sophistication of ideas to come.


Documentary Filmmakers

  • Documentary filmmakers already shoot hundreds of hours of footage, meaning almost 98% of what they film is unused. This new form shall provide ample avenues for such filmmakers to explore supplementary content and tell additional stories too tangential to survive the traditional edit. Consequently they may have the easiest time adapting to this new form.


Other Interest Group filmmakers

  • Filmmakers who are spokesmen for any variety or combination of interest groups. It is quite possible that institutions might sponsor filmmakers who are felt to represent and articulate their views effectively.


Metanarrators

  • Filmmakers who will blend the lines between fact and fiction. They would use other platforms to augment the fictional world of their films, expanding upon what was able to be shown within the film, featuring additional content and scenes. May also involve the audience to varying degrees, including Easter eggs, mysteries or various interactive features that effect and influence the viewing experience by audience input. This notion is different and expansive enough from the other types to warrant future discussion.


Any combination of the above

  • There is no reason to suspect that a filmmaker would be limited to one type or one interest group. Indeed the combination and intersection of interests shall serve as one basis for each individual filmmaker's appeal. The most successful filmmakers shall have the broadest appeal.



Implications


This model quite clearly shall appeal most strongly to independent productions and voices. The large studios would likely be the slowest and most hesitant to adopt this new model, waiting until they can come to grips with the financial realities beneath. What we may see is a vast democratization of filmmaking, where the filmmakers have almost direct access to their audiences. Gatekeepers, at least at first, will have to find new ways to insert themselves into the process, and for a time, there will be almost no decision makers between audience demand and artistic creation. As a result, films shall be more common, more personal, more varied and more risky. Films shall be heavy in jargon, specific lexicon and knowledge belonging to their respective niches. Films of this model shall better satisfy their highly specified audiences than is presently possible with global theatrical distribution.


Films made under this model will likely be small, low to moderately budgeted affairs, with geographically limited narratives. However, as technology continues to improve, small crews and low budget projects shall be able to attain production values successively greater than is presently possible on comparable budgets. Film style in general will be more greatly stratified, each creator attuned to the needs of their audience. The vast majority of creators will be relatively middle class in comparison to a hyper successful minority and the traditional Hollywood elite.

Theatrical windows may still exist, but shall be of more ceremonial importance than the chief financial drive of films made under this model. Revenues will come from a panoply of avenues, including ad partnerships, sponsorships, merchandising, on-demand, streaming and traditional distribution deals, and more. It is quite likely that large Hollywood tent poles and a smattering of prestige pictures shall continue to exist in some form or another, casting the widest net of appeal, and continuing to feature the highest budgets and most renowned talents. It is possible that some adopters of the new model might achieve widespread success that rivals the traditional model.



Drawbacks


Since we have thus far considered the bright possibilities that this new media form might bring, we must also consider some potential dangers and pitfalls that may lie within.


Given the historic propensities of human society, it is unlikely that this state of egalitarian, meritocratic artistry shall last forever. After several decades of relative openness, new gatekeepers, agents, managers and various kinds of middlemen shall likely insert themselves into the system, and themes, and styles shall again conglomerate. It is possible that institutional, corporate or government sponsorships of channels may become a necessary prerequisite for success. This may limit the range of topics to those which are deemed acceptable and approved. New forms of propaganda may proliferate, and audiences shall be unable to critically distinguish factual accounts from fabrication. The fairly egalitarian algorithms of YouTube may come to be replaced by more biased modes of selection. Audiences shall be highly stratified into specific interest groups, having little reason to interact with ideas from opposing sources. As a word of qualification, the dangers of a closed, propagandistic society exist regardless of the types of media available.


Even without Orwellian overtones, filmmakers may simply feel enslaved to their personas and PR machines. Following the initial democratization, newcomers may have an increasingly hard time gaining viewership in a saturated market. The charming amateur works of novice filmmakers may be crowded out by professionals on a platform initially meant for the general population. It may be difficult for films to gain an audience without an accompanying personality and vast library of supplemental material. On the flip side, films made for smaller audiences in the current market rarely reach their audiences to the full potential. And most novice filmmakers presently have a difficult time having their work seen as it is. So what we are describing here might represent something of a market correction, albeit with the necessary Faustian Bargain to accompany it. Like most innovations of society and technology, benefits and drawbacks shall come forth from the same hand.



Obstacles


There are a number of variables at play which might hinder this vision from ever coming into reality, or might limit the extent to which it manifests. Whether or not these problems are soluble is a question that must be left to time.


Films are immensely difficult to make at every aspect of production. The emotional and physical toil on both cast and crew is well documented. This difficulty leads to two obstacles. Firstly, the difficulty of filmmaking means that only a limited number of films can be made within any given time frame. The relative infrequency of filmmaking might mean that creators can never effectively satiate the audiences viewing needs in a timely manner. Secondly, the energies of the creators might be too completely absorbed in the traditional process of filmmaking such that no time is left for supplemental content.


Filmmakers may never embrace the role of film critics. Although not every form of this model requires critique in a formal sense, almost all the models shall require immense self reflection and verbalization of private artistic processes in manners unprecedented for artists. While social media gives us reason to suspect that millennial and post millennial generations might embrace this, there simply is no guarantee that creators shall embrace these supplemental endeavors with the same rigor they apply to their primary focus.


The scale of audiences might be too small to rival the financial impact of the traditional models of filmmaking. Thus, filmmakers may have difficulty procuring the necessary funds in order to deliver content up to the standards of their own audience.


Cinema may be too direct a medium to blend well with the low-commitment contract content that characterizes Youtube and most new media platforms. Thus, views on the latter platforms might not lead to actual purchases of tickets or on-demand streaming to the level necessary to justify expenses.


Although we can expect low-commitment content to proliferate even further than it already has, it may be the case that it is not possible to effectively integrate this with the cinematic experience.


Ultimately the question is not whether or not these new forms shall exist, but to what degree. None of these problems ought to be unsolvable. They merely represent factors that shall heavily influence decision making processes, and determine who shall succeed and who shall fail.




Conclusion and Personal Thoughts


Speaking broadly, digital filmmaking can be said to have at least three forms: traditional cinema, series streaming, and user uploaded content, mostly via Youtube. The lines between these modes shall blur with each taking on many of the characteristics of the other, yet continuing to exist on their own to some degree. This shall result in the democratization of filmmaking, bursts of creativity, interactive audience experiences, and a wide swath of films appealing to vastly different, yet interconnected audiences.


Despite my usual trepidation about the future, the manifold potential drawbacks, and the obstacles that stand in the way of this vision, I find myself optimistic. I am fascinated by the idea of art as the connective tissue of society, the means by which we understand perspectives and ideas foreign to our own. It connects us to the past and draws us into the future. I love when, in my personal reading, I encounter writers who reference their forerunners who shaped them, or the historical events that molded them. Or in seeing two artists' paths cross at a certain point in their lives, resulting in a beautiful collaboration, only to separate again. In this vision, I see immense potential to fulfill this ideal in contrast to our present oligarchic, propagandist, and blandly commercialized forms.


There will be many modes of this media conflagration. My own inclination is to contextualize work within art, society, and history at large. Others shall comprehensively document their creative process to such a degree that their followers shall nearly participate in the making of the film. But the most interesting of all of these forms shall be the fictional extensions of the narrative into other mediums, where fact and fantasy meld, and there is no clear line as to where the story of the film ends and real life begins. It will be fascinating to behold, like a massive, live symphony. One note, one share, one upload at a time, unfolding over weeks and weeks, complete with motif and leitmotif, and themes and references, and arcs and twists, and beginnings and ends, across a dozen mediums and culminating in the release of a film that shall merely serve to tie the disparate threads together.


There will likely be many such filmmakers in this young generation, so inundated with social media, that it is part of their very bone. For them, to be open and honest with their digital friends shall not be a chore but a natural extension of themselves. It shall be as ordinary to them as any other kind of conversation. No other generation has this kind of integration with the internet. In my experience, even millennials feel a certain unease and existential threat in the vanguard of social media but this is a feeling largely absent in the next generation.


Undoubtedly, new media forms will continue to enter the picture, presenting unimaginable possibilities. Current mediums shall change and evolve such that the present forms appear as nothing but the crude progenitors of the things to come. Yet it shall never be technology alone that connects us in our lonely Twenty-First Century. It shall be the art: the Internet of Us.
